I am so happy to present the first Sistah Circle in Kigali hosted by Giramata. This event is very special to me, as sister circles over the years have given me strength, helped my growth be it socially or politically as an activist and taught me the power of sisterhood. It is at sister circles I learned to name my experiences and pain and evenmore it is there I learned about the power of my voice in changing and making the world better.
Sistah Circle will be a time for womyn to exchange ideas on four topics in forms of discussion workshops. This is a time to truly dive deep into the topics by understanding what the next sister sees and understands- this way we can come up with the idea of what kind of community we envision to be safe and frutiful for womyn. The topics were chosen from a poll to encompass the needs of Rwandan womyn.
The topics surround Community and our role as womyn, Mental Health, Body Image, Sexuality and so forth.
This Sistah Circle will follow 3 powerful concepts from popular icon, theorist and community organizer Queer Black feminist Audre Lorde.
1. I am not free while any woman is unfree, even when her shackles are very different from my own.
2. Without community, there is no liberation…but community must not mean a shedding of our differences, nor the pathetic pretense that these differences do not exist.
3. When I dare to be powerful, to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid.
The words of Lorde will guide our conversations as we deconstruct our ideologies, and lifestyles. The main purpose for this is to ensure you are no stranger to your sister’s struggle and that you know when your foot is on her neck. It is meant to help us take down the myths that womyn are to always be in competition and start building a community of support because we are stronger, more powerful and dangerous as a collective. The Sistah Circle will also feature affirmation circles and journaling at the end.
